#MartinLutherKingDay - See Quotes, Iconic Photos From Beyonce, Common, Lupita, Gabrielle Union

Posted in: , ,

Happy MLK Day everyone! Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of God who sacrificed his life fighting for a better future for everyone. He stood for peace, he stood for freedom, and he taught us how we can advocate for both in a non-violent way. The winner of the Nobel Peace prize while just 35, MLK fought for civil rights for African Americans including the voting rights in 1965 as portrayed in the powerful movie, SELMA.

To honor the legend today being the first Monday in January, celebrities, including Beyonce, Lupita Nyong'o, Gabrielle Union, Alicia Keys and more, took to social media to share their favorite quotes, tributes and iconic photos.

Martin Luther King Jr Children In Legal Battle Over His Bible and Noble Prize

Posted in: , , ,

Above are the four children of Martin Luther King Jr. with wife, Coretta Scott King. They are from left, Dexter Scott King, Rev. Bernice King, Martin Luther King III and Yolanda King.

This picture was taken at a church service in Atlanta in 2006, but now all is not well in the family as the children are currently embroiled in a legal battle over their father's Bible and Nobel Peace Prize. The sons want to sell the items to raise money for their father's estate needs. The first daughter wants to hold onto the artifacts for their mother's estate.

After seeing the SELMA Movie just a few days ago and marveling at the forgiveness that marked MLK's relationship with his wife, I find this petty squables among the children so saddening.

Right from when the Martin Luther King Memorial was commisioned last year, I filed it away as a bucket list item, so when we planned a DC Trip, it got into our itinerary. It did take some walking to get there and a little drama with a couple of bike-rickshaws, but it was a trip worth making. Here's what the National Park Service says about the monument;
